Welcome to Parkinson's disease and Music
There is a 60 year history of research into the use of music for motor symptoms associated with Parkinson's disease. The heterogenous nature of PD, together with secondary motor complications that arise from the use of medication, can make the use of supplementary therapies such as physical or music therapies helpful for patients.
During my Master's, I developed an animal model of sound-induced movement under Dr. Ian Whishaw of the Canadian Centre for Behavioural Neuroscience. We demonstrated the central role of cued (i.e., in the presence of sound) motor experience for movement in the parkinsonian model. I am now pursuing my Doctorate under Dr. Bin Hu of the Hotchkiss Brain Institute, and am studying the possible contribution of the inferior temporal lobe in mediating sound- and music-induced movement in Parkinson's disease.
